The Pressure to Rematch: Sean Strickland's Story
In a recent interview, Sean Strickland revealed the controversial circumstances surrounding his UFC 312 rematch with Dricus Du Plessis. Strickland, a former middleweight champion, claimed that he was not in an optimal state to take on Du Plessis again, but the UFC had other plans.
Strickland's journey began with a loss to Du Plessis at UFC 297, followed by a triumphant win over Paulo Costa. This victory earned him a shot at redemption, but as he explains, it came at a cost.
"I was riding motorcycles with Axell Hodges when I broke my shoulder. I was in Colombia, undergoing stem cell treatment for my shoulder injury, when the UFC approached me about the fight. In the UFC, you don't say no. They're the masters, and you have to follow their orders. I felt pressured into taking the fight, and it left me in a difficult position," Strickland shared.
The rematch ended in another loss for Strickland, but this time, it was more decisive. He attributes this to the physical compromise he was in, highlighting the importance of being in peak condition for such high-stakes matches.
"Taking time off to let my body heal has been a blessing. My shoulder feels great now, but I do miss the thrill of fighting. It's been a nice break, being a lazy, relaxed guy for a change," he added with a touch of humor.
Strickland is now set to return to the octagon against Anthony Hernandez, a rising contender, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 267 on February 21st. This time, he'll be fully prepared and healed, ready to showcase his skills without any physical limitations.
