Nurse's Emotional Journey: Overcoming Breast Cancer and Mastectomy (2026)

A nurse's cancer journey: 'I wasn't ready for a mastectomy'

A hospital nurse, Kerry Noble, bravely shares her experience with breast cancer, detailing the emotional and physical challenges she faced during her mastectomy and recovery. Despite her extensive medical knowledge, Noble was unprepared for the vulnerability and anxiety associated with the procedure.

Noble, a theatre coordinator and senior sister at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. The diagnosis came as a shock, especially given her family history of the disease, with four out of five of her aunts having died from breast cancer. The timing of the diagnosis, just days before her mother's funeral, added to the emotional turmoil.

"I was anxious about being so vulnerable in front of my colleagues," Noble said. "But they were fantastic and really looked after me." Her colleagues, Karen, Andrea, and Kelly, played a crucial role in her recovery, assisting with daily tasks such as showering, cooking, and dressing changes.

Noble underwent a mastectomy with reconstruction, but she encountered complications during and after the operation. Despite the challenges, she remained positive, focusing on one day at a time. She took eight months off work to recover and had to adjust her role due to the impact of her treatment.

"I have been very open about my journey," Noble said. "People will come and talk to me about their own worries or something a family member is going through, and I'm always happy to listen and share my own experiences." Her openness has helped others, but she also acknowledges the changes she has undergone, both physically and emotionally.

"I will never be the same person I was two years ago," she said. "But I have a new grandson to enjoy, and new adventures to look forward to." Noble's story highlights the importance of support systems and the emotional journey that accompanies a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
