MTV's Music Channels: A Farewell to an Era (2026)

MTV’s Music-Only Channels Are Set to Fade Away

I Want My MTV

This decision marks a significant turning point for music channels, impacting various regions, including the U.K., Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil.

As of today, December 31, MTV will officially cease operations for many of its remaining dedicated 24-hour music channels. This move, which was first announced back in October, is part of a broader strategy that will see five MTV channels in the U.K. go off the air. Specifically, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live are all included in this shutdown. Notably, MTV Music, which debuted in 2011, concluded its broadcast by airing the iconic song "Video Killed the Radio Star" — the very first music video ever played on MTV when it launched in the U.S. back in 1981.

The parent company of MTV, Paramount Skydance, is also expected to discontinue similar music-only channels in Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil. As of now, representatives from MTV in the United States have not responded to requests for comments regarding the full list of channels being affected by this closure.

While MTV is eliminating a significant portion of its dedicated music programming, its flagship channels are still anticipated to continue broadcasting in the U.K. and other regions. Similar to the situation in the U.S., these core channels primarily feature highly popular reality television shows rather than music videos, marking a shift in their content focus.

This restructuring at MTV comes amid Paramount Skydance's efforts to reduce expenses following its controversial and high-profile merger that took place earlier this year. However, CEO David Ellison has expressed intentions to revitalize MTV and its other cable channels, although the details of such revitalization remain somewhat vague at this time.

In September, The Wall Street Journal reported that Ellison had been gathering ideas for MTV’s future from influential figures within the music industry, including Irving Azoff and Lucian Grainge, along with various well-known artists. There have also been talks about transforming MTV into an online streaming platform that could potentially compete with prominent services like Spotify or YouTube.

The decision to eliminate MTV’s music-only channels is just one of several cost-cutting actions taken by Paramount this year. Earlier in February, amid ongoing discussions regarding the Skydance merger, MTV announced the cancellation of various awards shows, including the MTV Europe Music Awards and the MTV Latin America’s MIAW Awards, previously known as the Millennial Awards.
