Speaking with NFL Network's The Insiders, Jones revealed that this year with the 49ers, under the guidance of Kyle Shanahan and surrounded by a star-studded offense, was precisely the career reset he needed.
"Getting back to having fun and being around a group of guys that I really mesh well with, coaches and players," Jones shared on Wednesday. "I felt like it was very laid back, but we put in a lot of work in OTAs. Just for them to take me under their wing and for me to learn from all the Hall of Fame players we have, it was awesome. Kyle has been great for me. We're really on the same … I call it 'wi-fi.' We're just a really good match."
But here's where it gets interesting... While Jones clearly cherishes his time in San Francisco and feels a strong connection with the team and its coaching staff, he's also a realist. He understands that his most promising path to becoming a full-time starter might lie with a different organization. He's currently under contract with the 49ers through the 2026 season, having signed a two-year deal last year. While he'd be genuinely excited to return to San Francisco, the allure of a starting gig elsewhere is a significant factor.
"Honestly, it's a business. You know how this goes," Jones candidly stated. "I've proven I can be a starter. I've proven I can be a starter in multiple different spots. I have 50-plus starts or whatever. I know how to do it, but it's also a business. I understand both sides of it."
And this is the part most people miss: Jones' name is already circulating as a potential starting option for other NFL teams, and he's fully aware of the buzz. If a trade does happen, his ideal scenario is to land in a situation that mirrors San Francisco's – a team with a strong supporting cast that allows both the quarterback and the team to excel.
"If you're a quarterback that's a free agent or could get traded or whatever your situation is, you want to go somewhere that fits and makes sense," Jones explained. "At the end of the day, that's what I want in San Francisco. We'll see what happens. It's good to be talked about."
Consider the journey of Sam Darnold, one of the quarterbacks who played in the Super Bowl this year. Darnold followed a somewhat similar trajectory, joining the 49ers for a season after challenging stints with the Jets and Panthers. After a successful year in Minnesota, Darnold leveraged that experience into a long-term starting role with the Seattle Seahawks, and it has proven to be a very fruitful move for him.
Jones has observed how Darnold parlayed his single season with Kyle Shanahan into greater opportunities and is clearly taking inspiration from it. "I get asked that a lot. Everyone's journey is so different," Jones commented. "I feel like I've watched him in interviews, and he does say that learning from Kyle and Brock really changed his career. I see why now. I've learned so much this year. I know Sam probably felt the same way (in his one year in San Francisco). You can see it on the tape, there's a lot of crossover."
Adding to his confidence, Jones also clarified that a knee injury he managed during his starting period did not hinder his performance and isn't a lingering concern. "I think (the team) did a great job (with the injury)," he said. "I felt healthy this year. I didn't miss any snaps. I played every snap. I am a guy where, unless I am severely injured, I am not missing anything."
Now, the big question for Jones is what his 2026 season will look like – will he continue his journey with the 49ers, or will he be competing for a starting position elsewhere?
"It's definitely motivating for me," he affirmed. "I feel I can do that. I have my swag back, and I feel like that's important for me. I can go out there and win games for whoever."
