Kabin Studio's Garry McCarthy Named Cork Person of the Year (2026)

A true musical hero has been crowned Cork Person of the Year, and his impact on the community is nothing short of inspiring. Garry McCarthy, known creatively as GMC, has dedicated over two decades to nurturing young talent and fostering a vibrant music scene in Cork. His work at The Kabin Studio in Knocknaheeny has not only produced chart-topping hits but has also transformed lives.

The Kabin Studio, under McCarthy's leadership, has become a hub for musical expression and a safe space for young artists to thrive. One of its most notable achievements was the creation of the hit song "The Spark," which took the world by storm with over 1.5 billion views on TikTok and 9 million views on YouTube. This song brought together children from diverse backgrounds, including those from a direct provision center in Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare, and others from Cork city, creating a powerful musical collaboration.

But here's where it gets controversial... McCarthy's impact extends far beyond just one hit song. He has organized an incredible 2,500 music workshops through his GMCBeats and Song-in-a-Day projects, providing an inclusive platform for young people to explore their creativity and gain valuable recording experience. His mentorship has touched the lives of countless aspiring artists, and his reach even extends internationally with virtual mentoring sessions.

And this is the part most people miss... McCarthy's work isn't just about the music. It's about building community, breaking down barriers, and empowering individuals. His studio has become a second home for many, with even grandparents joining in on the rap game!

"I'm shocked with this recognition, especially surrounded by legends," McCarthy humbly admitted. "Working with the kids and seeing the community come together is truly special. Knocknaheeny has become a musical family."

The judges, Valerie O'Sullivan and Moira Murrell, chief executives of Cork City and County Councils, were unanimous in their decision to award McCarthy this prestigious honor. He was presented with the award by Lord Mayor of Cork, Fergal Dennehy, and Mayor of Co Cork, Mary Linehan-Foley.

In a heartwarming twist, The Dixies drummer Joe Mac, approaching his 90th birthday, was also recognized with a 'supreme Cork' award for his lifelong dedication to Cork's music scene. This surprise presentation, made by previous Cork Person of the Year winner Shane Casey (aka Billy Murphy of The Young Offenders), brought the evening to a delightful close.

So, what do you think? Is community-driven music the key to fostering talent and building a brighter future? Or is there more to it? Let's discuss in the comments and share our thoughts on the power of music and its impact on our communities!
