From saving eggshells to create his own celestial masterpiece to imposing a self-imposed rule of painting exclusively in orange for five years, Nixon's artistic journey was nothing short of extraordinary. But here's where it gets controversial... his hardline minimalism, far from being restrictive, breathed life and joy into his work, challenging the orthodoxy of the art world.
"Through his life and work, he wanted to challenge everything," says Sue Cramer, Nixon's wife and co-curator of his first major exhibition since his passing in 2020. Cramer has embarked on a personal and professional journey, curating thousands of Nixon's artworks, a testament to his prolific career spanning painting, prints, text, music, film, and more.
The exhibition, titled "Song of the Earth 1968-2020," showcases Nixon's gentleness and rigor, a celebration of his love for nature and music. It opens with a vibrant room dedicated to his Experimental Painting Workshop (EPW), a long-standing project that birthed abstract paintings influenced by conceptualism, minimalism, and Russian constructivism. Among the playful lines and forms, you'll find his iconic orange paintings from the '90s, featuring unconventional materials like sawdust and onion bags, and his shimmering silver series, a true feast for the eyes.
Nixon's use of found objects and inexpensive materials was not just a creative choice but a necessity born out of financial constraints. "It was his way of creating something from nothing," Cramer explains. But this frugality became a signature style, a testament to his resourcefulness.
And this is the part most people miss... Nixon's journey began in the '60s, and he knew he was embarking on a lifelong exploration of color and form. Cramer believes he understood the impact and statement his vast body of work would make.
The exhibition also features Nixon's installation at Documenta 7, an influential international exhibition in 1982. His first and last works are placed facing each other, a poignant tribute to his artistic legacy. His final pieces, created in 2020 when he knew his time was limited, feature squares within squares, almost like a metaphor for eyes, a powerful reflection on his life's work.
Nixon's influence on the Australian art scene was profound. He engaged sincerely with modernist art histories, writing manifestos for his vision of experimental art. His work often incorporated labor and making, with canvases covered in hessian potato bags and pumpkin seeds, and paintings holding tools like hammers and saws. He saw his art as work, inspired by the Russian Constructivism movement, an early 20th-century art movement that prioritized abstract forms and industrial materials for social purposes.
"He found a precedent for reinventing art," Cramer explains. "He borrowed from that precedent, taking it into the future, responding to its poetry and ambition, integrating art into life."
