It's truly heartwarming to see communities coming together to support those in need, and the recent actions of the Ballyloughan guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) are a shining example of this. They've made a significant difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by dementia.
The Ballyloughan ICA recently presented a cheque to Bethany House Day Care Centre in Carlow, a facility dedicated to providing specialized care and support for people living with dementia. The cheque, worth a generous €2,130, was presented following the guild's monthly meeting held at Bethany House in October. The staff at Bethany House graciously hosted the ICA members, providing refreshments for the occasion.
But how did they raise such a substantial amount? The funds were collected through a bake sale and coffee morning organized by the Ballyloughan ICA, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. This is a fantastic example of community spirit in action!
Susan O’Byrne, the Nurse Manager at Bethany House, expressed her gratitude for the ICA's generous donation. She explained that the money raised locally directly benefits day centres like Bethany House and the home care services offered by the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. These home care services are crucial, offering respite and free time to family members who are caring for loved ones with dementia. The remaining funds will be used to organize engaging activities like concerts and exercise classes at the day centre.
Mary Abbey, President of the Ballyloughan ICA, shared the heartfelt reason behind their choice of beneficiaries: “We chose Bethany House and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland because a couple of our members had dementia and have since passed away, and there’s one person currently living with it, so that was our motive.” This personal connection highlights the profound impact of dementia on individuals and communities. Ballyloughan ICA has a history of supporting important local services and charities in the Carlow area, proving their commitment to making a positive difference.
