England’s hockey campaigns in the FIH Pro League got off to rough starts in Dublin, with both the men’s and women’s teams suffering defeats in their opening fixtures. The men were edged 4-1 by Germany, while the women fell 3-0 to Belgium in challenging, windy conditions.
For the men, Nick Bandurak managed to level the score after an early setback, but Germany struck again through Justus Weigand to reclaim the lead and never looked back. The English attack struggled to break through as the German side extended their advantage.
Conversely, the women faced a difficult start as Belgium jumped ahead courtesy of Stephanie Vanden Borre. Despite England’s efforts to recover, Belgium sealed the win when Charlotte Englebert converted a late chance into an empty net while England had withdrawn their goalkeeper in search of a late comeback.
Looking ahead, the men will take on Belgium on Thursday, while the women are scheduled to meet Ireland on the same day, as they both aim to bounce back from a disappointing start and climb the Pro League standings.
Which team do you think will rebound most effectively, and what tactical changes should they consider to turn their fortunes around in the next fixtures?
