The Australian Open 2026 draw is set, and the stage is now set for a thrilling tournament! Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic are all gearing up, and their first-round opponents have been revealed. Let's dive into the details!
For Emma Raducanu, the path to glory at the Australian Open seems to have gotten a little tougher. She's seeded at a major for the first time since the 2022 US Open, a significant milestone. However, she faces a potential third-round match against none other than world number one, Aryna Sabalenka.
Raducanu's journey begins with a match against Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand. If she wins, she'll face either Anastasia Potopova or Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands in the second round. Meanwhile, two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka will kick off her campaign against French wildcard Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah. And don't forget defending champion Madison Keys, who triumphed over Sabalenka in last year's final; she'll be up against Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova.
On the men's side, two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner will start his quest against Hugo Gaston of France. A potential final showdown with his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, is on the cards, as they've battled in the trophy matches at the last three majors. Adding to the excitement, Sinner could face 10-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish world number one, will start his tournament against Adam Walton of Australia.
Raducanu's journey is particularly intriguing. Given her inconsistent form since her 2021 US Open win, looking too far ahead is risky. But, she's shown encouraging progress, improving her fitness and demonstrating more resilience.
But here's where it gets controversial... if Raducanu faces Sabalenka, it's a chance to prove she can beat the best. Last year, all four of her Grand Slam defeats came against top players, who, Raducanu said, had extra motivation to defeat her. She faced tough losses against Iga Swiatek and was tested by Sabalenka at Wimbledon. At the US Open, she struggled against Elena Rybakina.
Taking down a top-ranked player isn't essential, but it would show Raducanu's ability to compete with the best. It would also likely make other players take her more seriously. Being a lower seed, Raducanu knew she'd face a top-eight player in the third round if she got there. Sabalenka might not have been her first choice. While Raducanu gave her a challenge in Cincinnati last year, Sabalenka has a strong record on Australian hard courts and won the Brisbane International recently.
And this is the part most people miss... There are no guarantees Sabalenka will make it to the last 32. If she doesn't beat Rakotomanga Rajaonah, and then Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or a qualifier, it would be a major upset.
Raducanu is one of seven British players in the Australian Open singles draws. Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, and Francesca Jones are also competing. Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley will also be playing. Arthur Fery will play in his first overseas Grand Slam after qualifying.
