Imagine facing weeks of unexpected detours and delays – that's the reality for drivers near Bath as a significant stretch of the A46 prepares for a major overhaul! A hefty £6 million investment is earmarked to enhance this crucial route, but it comes at a cost: nightly closures that are sure to disrupt commutes and travel plans.
So, what exactly is going on? For two months, from January 18th to March 20th, the A46 will be completely shut down in both directions between the Cold Ashton and London Road roundabouts. These closures will be in effect from 8 PM (20:00 GMT) to 6 AM (06:00 GMT), Monday through Friday. And this is the part most people miss... there will also be lane closures affecting the three-lane section of the A46 near Charmy Down during the same period, potentially adding to the congestion.
National Highways, the agency responsible for maintaining England's major roads, states that these improvements are "essential" given that approximately 20,000 vehicles use this route daily. The investment aims to address several key areas. First, the road surface is being completely replaced, promising a smoother and potentially quieter ride. Second, signage will be upgraded, which should improve navigation, especially for those unfamiliar with the area. And finally, drainage systems are being enhanced to combat flooding, a persistent problem on this stretch of road. Upgraded chevron signs will also be installed at the Hartley Bends, an area known for its curves, with the hope of significantly improving road safety.
National Highways Route Manager, Sean Walsh, emphasized the importance of these improvements, noting that the high volume of daily traffic necessitates proactive maintenance to ensure the road remains safe and reliable. Survey work is scheduled to commence on January 18th, with drainage improvements at Four Winds Farm and resurfacing at Hartley Bends following later in the year.
Of course, with major roadworks come diversions. Signed diversion routes will be in place for both northbound and southbound traffic. Drivers are strongly advised to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time to reach their destinations. This is where it gets controversial... some local residents feel that the overnight closures, while disruptive, are preferable to daytime works that would cause even greater congestion. Others argue that the project should be completed more quickly, even if it means more intensive daytime work. What do you think? Are night closures the best solution, or should other options be considered?
